Installing roof shingles can be an arduous task and should not be attempted if you don’t know what you are doing. It is vital to ensure that you complete adequate roof preparation before installing roof shingles otherwise you are risking the integrity of your new roof. A poorly prepared roof can quickly lead to holes and cracks that will in turn to lead to a leaking roof. Obviously the first part of your roof preparation before installing roof shingles is to rip off the hold or damaged shingles that you are replacing. While it is possible to leave these on if they are showing any signs of damage or wear you should replace them whenever possible.
Secure the roof boards
If you are using the same roof boards without replacing them you really should check each and every one to make sure none of them need replacing. Make sure they are all securely fastened down to prevent any damage to the lining or to the shingles. You also need to make sure there is no debris lying around because this too can cause damage to your new roof. Make sure no nails or other objects are protruding out of the roof.
Installing the drip edge.
Install the drip edge around the eave ends of the roof. Be sure to use galvanized nails so that they don’t rust in the rain. When adding the drip edge to the top of the roof install in the same way but this must drape over the rest of the drip edge to be effective. If you need to make any joints because the length of drip edge is not long enough to fit down the whole length of the eave then simple overlap the two pieces and bend the aluminum into place.
Ice and water shield.
You should consider putting down a layer of ice and water shield. Some states require that you use this and have set distances that the shield must be from the wall. It is very good stuff and incredibly adhesive so place it down where you want it to go before removing the backing paper. Once it’s stuck there is no way of removing it. Ice and water shield will cost you a fair amount at around $50 per square foot but the job it does is invaluable and a vital step when you are finishing your roof preparation before installing roof shingles. Cover any large knot holes with aluminum flashing or a similar material and hammer these down (you may want to use a hammer tacker or nail gun to make this step a little quicker and easier).
Adding the layer of felt.
Overlap your felt by a few inches and completely cover one side of the roof. To install a roof vent at this point you should cut a small part of the roof on either side of the peak virtually the whole length of the roof. Now cover the remaining side of the roof with felt and also cover over the roof vent hole you have created. This will be cut later. You have now finished the roof preparation before installing roof shingles and are ready to shingle your roof.

The only way to keep cool is to switch up the air conditioning or to prevent your roof getting so hot in the first place. The way to achieve that is through insulation, and the most effective type of insulation for the exterior of a roof is a heat reflective roof paint. A good insulating paint can reduce your roof temperature by up to 40 degrees: just think of what that would mean in terms of a reduction in the amount of heat conducting and radiating into your roof space, and then to the rest of the house.

In fact, in measurable terms, that temperature reduction is just over 20 degrees. Imaging a 20 degree reduction in your room temperature and what that can mean in terms of hard cash spent on air conditioning costs! A whole 20 degrees is a lot of heat to remove using an air conditioning unit, when all you need is a coat of paint to achieve the same result. Roof painters that stress the savings are, in this case, totally correct because heat reflective paints can save you a lot of money.

However, keeping you cool is not the only benefit offer by heat reflective roof paints. There is also the benefit of extra waterproofing just in case the hot sun changes to a storm. Your roof is not only insulated and reflective, but also protected from the weather. The insulation and reflection help to keep heat in during the winter and heat out during the summer months and so save you money all year round. In fact some people can save up to 50% on their air conditioning costs.

A hidden benefit is a reduction in the thermal shock cause by continual expansion and contraction of your roofing materials that reduces the lifetime, not only of your roof coating, but also of the entire roof itself. Not only that, but they can also be used to restore your roof. If your roof is cracked or damage, these paints will repair and restore it, and they are generally available in a wide colour range. If you want to restore and insulate your roof, heat reflective paints are definitely the least expensive option, but by no means a lower quality one.

Then there is the environment. Because your home is made more energy efficient, you will be using less electricity to stay cool in the summer and less heating to keep warm in the winter. This gives your home running costs an economical carbon footprint due to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. This has been proved by means of tests carried out by universities, and whether you do it yourself or employ roof painters, you will not only be saving money but also saving the planet.

All of these advantages seem almost too good to be true, and you likely think that the cost is going to be prohibitive, yet that is not the case. In fact reflective paints are available at very similar prices to normal roof paints, and you don’t need any special skills or equipment to apply them: you can do it yourself or hire a regular roof painter.

When purchasing such paints, you should take the time to check out the specification of the roof paint, since each manufacturer uses their own method of making them reflect heat and cool the roof surface. A good paint can last a long time, and it is not unknown for heat reflective paints to be effective for up to 30 years.

The reflective value of each colour can be different, and is expressed in terms of TSR (Total Solar Reflection). The higher the TSR figure, the cooler your home will be and the more money you will save. Heat reflective roof paint has the unusual property of saving you money in both heating and cooling your home, and it is important to select the correct paint for the job. If you want to stay cool and insulate your home, then heat reflective roof paints is the ideal roof covering for you.

1. Poor Roof Construction — This has become a serious problem in the past 15 years or so. Due to constant changes in the economy, the bidding on new structures (which includes virtually every kind of building including schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, shopping malls, and industrial buildings) has become so fierce that to get the job the roofing contractors must cut corners.

The roofing contractors must fight the weather to meet completion deadlines. Oftentimes installation continues during unfavorable weather conditions. Sometimes moisture is trapped in the roofing system and can contribute to early failure of the roof.

2. Normal Aging and Weathering – A roof begins to deteriorate the day it is constructed. Its main enemy is the weather. It takes a pounding from the sun, rain, snow and sleet; it is scorched by intense summer heat and buffeted by high winds from storms. The sun dries out the roofing paper; causes the tar to run and sag, weakening the roof mat. As this oxidation soaks the oils out of the paper, it becomes brittle and subject to cracking and splitting; and when the weather suddenly changes, the extreme expansion and contraction brings the ultimate disaster – A roof leak!

3. Settling of the Building – All buildings settle; It is their nature, but some settle much more than others. When a building settles at an abnormal rate, this puts great stress on the roof. This unusual movement can, and will, create enough strain to cause a roof leak, which if left ignored will result in a general roof breakdown.

4. Vibrations – Some of these result from natural phenomena such as earth tremors, severe storms such as tornadoes and hurricanes. Even buildings located many miles from such an act of nature can get enough impact to put a strain on the building, which in turn carried to the roof can contribute to a roof leak. Other vibrations from machines, equipment, air conditioners, railroads and truck traffic cause early failure.

5. Mechanical Damage – Much more prevalent than you might think. In today’s technology, it has become standard to put many pieces of equipment on the roofs; air conditioning units, phone and TV antennas, sign supports, elevator housings etc., which presents a serious problem for two reasons.

Sources:
Roof Leaks and Roof Repair
Liquid Rubber & Liquid EPDM
EPDM Coatings

Just as your house needs to be clean, so does your roof. A good roof cleaning should be done for a different reason, though. If you house is near a tree, built in a location that has high humidity, or is near a source of humidity such as a lake, pond, or pool, then your roof may be susceptible to fungus. Not only does this sound disgusting, but it is downright dangerous. Fungus can cause children (and others) to become sick, and it can even find its way into the house itself.
The most effective method of roof cleaning is to use a pressure washer surface cleaner. When used with a cleaning agent, the roof can be restored to the way it was when it was first installed. Unlike the bleach that some contractors use, soap solutions are safer for plants and animals, and will not harm the surface you are cleaning.
Once you have your materials together, you can begin. Roof cleaning is done in two phases. First is the removal of dirt and fungus, and the second is the rinsing of the roof. One of the corners of the roof is the best place to begin. Move the surface pressure washer back and forth in a three to four foot path. It’s safe to move it over the same spot several times if you have to. If you have to, feel free to use more detergent. If it’s hot out, use clean water to rinse the area off that you are cleaning every ten to fifteen minutes or so, then continue with the washing.
When your roof cleaning is complete, be sure to rinse off the whole roof again, to remove any last traces of fungus or cleaning chemicals. What you should have left is a clean, safe roof that is like new.
*************************************
Note: Articles must be published “as is” (unedited, same bold characters and links).

Finding a roof cleaning company you can trust is not as easy as it seems. Calling a few of the businesses listed in your local trade directory will bring very promising responses. But, actually locating a roof cleaning company that can deliver on its promise is another story… That’s why it’s very important that you spend some time doing a due diligence check.

We have all heard of at least one horror story of people being tricked out of their hard earned money to pay for roof cleaning by some fly-by-night company who do an incredibly bad job and then take the money and run. Beware of scammers!

To make your life easier and save you from any troubles down the road, first make sure that your roof cleaning company is both comprehensively insured and bonded, and that it carries Workman’s Compensation for its workers. You don’t want one of these fellows falling off your roof and presenting you with a claim for compensation do you?

Never underestimate the importance of using low toxicity chemicals for your roof cleaning job. Insist, that the roof cleaning company you’re going to contract, present you with the list of products that they will use for the job. Ask them about the health implications; your safety is much more important than some meagre savings that you’ll make agreeing to chep chemicals. besides, your roof cleaning company should provide you, without you asking, with the full environmental impact statement pertaining to your particular situation.

Asking a roof cleaning company for details of their worker’s training is also not unreasonable. I know that I would want to know if they have been properly trained in not only job safety, but also are well versed in OSHA and EPA guidelines. There are also organizations that they could belong to which will indicate that they are serious about their trade and their customers. It is also reasonable to ask for data sheets on the chemicals that they use.

In some areas of the US, roof cleaaning should be repeated each year. yhis will eliminate the threat that some invasive algae poses to the concrete and ceramic tiles. Ocean side locations come to mind here… At the same time, be mindfull of the fact that the most effective chemical agents used in roof cleaning, are very toxic, and trying to avoid them affecting the adjacent area is your responsibility.

Many people are only just realizing that the black discoloration that they see on their tile or shingle roof isn’t dirt but a type of algae that is thriving on fiberglass roofing shingles in particular. This new roofing technology comes with a downside in areas that are humid, and that is because they contain limestone filler which provides a continuous banquet for algae who just love to eat it. Not only does this look unsightly, but if it is not removed it will considerably shorten the life of the roof.

One other often overlooked aspect is that the growth of the algae turning the roof black will mean that the roof will not be able to reflect the heat. Consequently more effort is required by your air-conditioner to keep you comfortable, and an increased power bill.

Never allow your roof to become a talking point of your neighbors. Get your roof cleaning company sooner rather than later, when evrybody notices that the issues of esthetics and routine maintenancee are not on your mind. Allowing your roof to slide into a state of disrepair will affect its resale value immensely. Never ignore it!

Regardless of your financial circumstances, try not to save on the necessary maintenance work on your home. Roof cleaning is one of the most important preventive meassures. Don’t ignore it!

Have you noticed recently that your roof is dirty and maybe starting to look like something that has been left in the refrigerator a little too long? All that dirt and moss isn’t just an eye sore, it is damaging your roof. Dirt can cause you rooftop to stop absorbing and reflecting away heat properly which can damage your shingles. As well moss and algae growth can damage shingles and remove the granules which protect your shingles from damage.

Not sure if your roof is at risk, there are a couple ways to check and see. The first way is to check the gutters, the more granules in the gutters the more damage your shingles are taking. Another way is to take a board and wrap some tape around one end so that the sticky side is out and press it against some shingles to see how many granules come lose. If you notice the areas with dirt and growth lose more granules then other areas.

Still not sure you should clean your roof or not, here is a list of some reasons why you should:

1. Prolongs shingle life

2. Makes ugly roof stains vanish

3. Lowers utility bills

4. Reduces airborne allergens helping allergy sufferers

5. Inexpensive, fast, dramatic home Improvement

6. Helps resale value/ property value

7. Improves drinking water for cistern users

8. Puts doubts about your roof to rest for potential homebuyers and home inspectors

9. Cheaper than a new roof

10. “Extreme Makeover” for your roof improves curb appeal

Please note that getting on your own roof if you do not have experience in rooftop work can be dangerous. There are many companies out there that specialize in (http://cnc-construction.biz/) rooftop cleaning and you should leave that work to professionals.

Roof Cleaning Products

I highly recommend looking into a product called Roof Reviver. It is specifically designed to clean roofs and remove the dirt and growth from rooftops. I am sure there are (http://cnc-construction.biz/) rooftop cleaning specialists in your area that use this product, just make a few phone calls and find out who.

Roof Reviver can, in most cases, restore you rooftop to like new condition with only one application. This will add years to your roof and make your house look much more attractive. If you are looking to sell your home soon this can also increase the selling points of your home. This is due to the fact that the buyers know that they will not need to have the roof replaced as it is clean and growth free. Once you roof is clean and great looking I also recommend getting it rinsed once a year to continue to keep it clean. This will greatly increase the life of your shingles and help save you the money of having your roof replaced before it needed to be.

Benefits of a Clean Roof

Roof stains can cause your roof to hold in more heat due to the darkening effect of the stains, as much as a 25 degree increase. This heat increase can shorten shingle life, increase your cooling bills, and increase personal discomfort in your home.

A dirty roof can make it much harder to sell your home when that time comes. A functional, yet badly stained roof can make home-buyers, real-estate agents, and home inspectors doubtful of the roofs reliability and may cause them to want it to be replaced even though it is a perfectly good roof, which is stained. Therefore getting your roof cleaned before putting it on the market can actually save you money.

Also it just makes your home look much better. Having all the moss, algae, and stains removed from your roof can increase the look of your home greatly, you may not even notice the effect the stains are having on the appeal of your home, because they have always been there.

In every summer, thousands of people need to transport their two wheelers on the four wheelers. In order to enjoy an exciting holidaying or weekend in the summer they load up their bikes and set out for breaks. So, adding roof racks on the top of their car become exigent for these people. Similarly, if they need to carry extra accessories that they cannot accommodate in the trunk of the car, they need to add roof boxes to their car.

The automobile market is all set to provide the car owners with whatever they need. Even, individual needs and choices are also taken in to account. This results in the availability of a wide range of variety in the design and shape of roof boxes. Regarding the colour, there are also good options available. The size of the boxes matters more than anything else, and the market has unlimited options in this regard too.

Almost all the roof boxes available in the market are chic and attractive. They are made in such designs and shape that they gel with the model of even the flashiest of cars. Though the owners of most swanky cars do not need roof top, for most others it is a valuable addition. Anyway, whatever may be the look of the car, roof boxes adds to its attraction instead of hampering its beauty. A nicely chosen box will beef up the beauty of the car instead of decreasing it.

Regarding the roof racks, there are also endless varieties available in the market. There are options like roof-mounted, single cycle versions; these are not only cheaper and easier but also good for leaving a little storage space for other purposes. If necessary, one can add roof boxes and roof racks to his car simultaneously. If the size of the car is not big then he may have to compromise a little on the size of the racks and boxes.

One accessory that can capacitate your car to carry extra luggage and at the same time beautify it is roof boxes. Its main purpose is to make room for accessories and luggage that the boot of your car cannot accommodate. But being flashy in design, cute in shape, gorgeous in colour, it keeps substantial contribution in the beautification of the car. Thus, it allows you to kill two birds with one stone!

Whether to go for shooting white-water or fishing deepwater, you have to carry your kayak or the fishing rod. And what better place to put them than the roof boxes or the roof racks! Same is the case with those going for cycling the back roads or for skiing in a mountain pass. They need to carry their bikes or skis with them. Similarly, while out on speed boating with your friends or camping with the kids, you need boat, tent and gear.

In all these purposes, roof boxes or roof racks offer valuable help. The trunk of your car may not be able to carry the loads of things you have to take with you. So it is the extended part of your car that you have to bank upon under such circumstances. And certainly it is the roof boxes or the roof racks that you will eye at. Fortunately they are capable of offering you the service you need.

The best thing about roof boxes or roof racks is that they are available in all sizes. They also offer variety in colour. This particular car accessory is available in the colours of average car. So, you can get the one that goes in sync with the style and colour of your car. Roof boxes are made by highly famous manufacturers and even by less known companies. It is recommendable to be a little careful about the authenticity while purchasing products of great brands.

Very often you may need to carry some accessories that you cannot accommodate in the trunk of the car as it is already occupied with other important things. Roof boxes come handy under such circumstances. By adding a box on the top of the car, you can do away with the space problem that occurs due to the extra accessorieres.

There are endless varieties in the automobile market with regard to roof boxes. Almost all the big names in car accessory industry manufacture roof tops. Though there is unlimited design and endless quality in all the mainstream car accessories, the roof boxes are made in some common shape and in average colour. However, there is no dearth of quality as various companies use various materials to make them.

Auto-Pals, Mont Blanc, Triton are some of the big names in the field of roof box manufacturing. They have boxes of various shape and design. All of the boxes from these companies come in the colour of average car. So, if you do not get a box exactly matching with the colour of your car, you can choose the one that gels with it better.

The best thing about the roof boxes is that you can add roof racks with them. So, you can carry bikes and other small accessories together. In this case, you may have to compromise with the size of the box and the racks, particularly, if the roof of your car is not spacious.

Nowadays Thule roof boxes are in high demand. They are made with heavy duty materials. So, they can resist the wear and tear caused by regular use. They also can easily resist the jerking and shaking of the car. Still, it is advisable not to depend on the name of the brand always when you want to buy roof boxes. Rather, it makes sense to examine the products of various brands and buy one after making comparison.

It is now a norm that owner of new houses install security alarm system to protect their house from theft.

There are many types of security alarm system available in the market and they mainly consist of magnetic contact and vibration sensors to be installed at doors or windows to detect any intrusion. There are also infra red sensor to detect any movement within any particular space such as living room etc.

While the magnetic contact or vibration sensors will trigger the alarm whenever there is an intruder entering through the door or window. Infra red sensor will detect movement but that include the movement of pet or rat.

Some intruder may choose to enter the house through the roof by removing the roof tiles. The infra red sensors can be used for the space below the roof tiles within the roof truss area above the ceiling but that will cause a lot of inconvenience to the occupant of the house as alarm will be triggered when ever there rats moving above the ceiling area. So most owner will compromise safety for the sake of convenience.

But if you are renovating your house and if your renovation works include the replacement of roof tiles, then you can take the opportunity to install a layer of galvanised iron steel sheet or plywood immediately below the roof tiles location to completely cover the roof area before the roof tiles are being relaid on the galvanised sheet or plywood. The steel sheet or plywood will prevent easy entry of thief as any cutting of those material will create noise and takes time which the thief surely do not want.

Moreover if you choose to use galvanised iron steel sheet to cover the roof below the roof tiles, the roof will be almost completely leak proof thus serving two purposes of theft prevention and leak prevention.

Removing Snow From Roof Is A Demanding Job

Removing snow from your roof is not the same as the removing snow from your garden. Where there is a possibility of snow, the roofs are made inclined and this is a major reason why the mechanical tools cannot be used by the house-owner. Either he has to use manual tools or he has to call for an expert in roof raking. Fortunately, the gravity works for the house-owner and if the snowfall is not continuous and long lasting, the nature itself would melt the snow and a minor effort on part of house-owner will ensure that no ice collects on the roof.

Roof Rakes Are Made Of Aluminum Or Hard Plastic

For roof raking aluminum ladder and roof rakes are required. The roof rakes are attached at the end of a tube. They are made of aluminum or hard plastic. Aluminum is preferred over plastic as they are not as tough as the aluminum ones. Aluminum ladder is necessary, as roof is slippery, inclined and thus not safe for access. Whatever portions can be reached with the help of the tube extensions, are cleared of collected snow and the other portions left out in as is condition.Chemical deicers if available in market can be used.

Safety In Roof Raking

Do not do the following when clearing the snow from roof.

1. Never ever, climb on the roof to clear the snow. All the ingredients for an accident are present the roof. A slippery surface and slope are sufficient for hurtling you downwards.

2. Do not work on the snow by mechanical means, that means no pounding or chopping.

3. Aluminum ladder should have a firm footing, and it should be anchored firmly. It should not topple down.

Roof Raking Alternatives

To reduce the manual effort required in roof raking and removing snow from roof, roof and gutter de-icing cable can be installed on the roof. This has to be installed on the roof in a zigzag pattern and parallel to the gutter. A controller situated in your house will ensure that the temperature of the area under the cable does not get hot.

Perhaps, like many people around the world, you have moss or algae growth on the roof of your house. This can occur on most common roofing materials: asphalt, cedar shakes, concrete tiles, etc., and will shorten the life of your roof. People with moss or algae growth on their roofs tend to live in areas with higher than normal rainfall and humidity levels.

Lichen spores are broadcast across roofs with even a light wind, and the spores will grow and develop into mature moss clump formations. In the Northern hemisphere, Moss grows more on the North face of a roof, or in areas with overhanging branches. Shady areas created by branches or other obstructions tend to foster the growth of moss and algae. Morning dew and rainfall will evaporate slower on these surfaces because of the minimal amount of direct sunlight the surfaces receive. Obviously, surfaces that receive more sunlight are less likely to be affected by moss or algae growth.

Moss can be of great concern to the homeowner, and will shorten the life of the roof if left untreated. Just like a household sponge, the shallow root system of thick Moss growth can suck up and store more than four times its weight in water. That is exactly what your moss-laden roof is doing: bearing weight on your sheathing, rafters, etc. In addition, root activity and moisture significantly speed up the deterioration of your shingles.

What Now?

Fortunately, moss can be a fixable problem if the homeowner doesn’t wait until the roof is too far-gone. Hiring an experienced professional for this dangerous work is an important first step. The proper use of meticulous roof cleaning tools gently removes heavy moss clump formations. The job is very tedious–the roof must be cleaned shingle by shingle, with careful attention paid to all other elements of the roof. This first step in removing the moss should not be over aggressive–typically the total moss removal at this step is 80% to 95%; the remaining 5% to 20% that was too tight or difficult to remove is then treated with an appropriate roof cleaning mixture. What a difference this will make to the look and life of your roof!

What can a Homeowner do to Prevent Moss and Algae Growth?

Preventing or minimizing moss and algae growth on your roof can be as easy as pruning any overhanging branches to decrease the amount of shade on your roof. The additional sunshine will inhibit the growth of moss and algae. In addition, air circulation over the roof will improve, speeding up the drying process after precipitation, and there will be far less organic debris from branches to hold moisture and feed moss and algae growth.

The first organizational meeting was held in Chicago in November where Jim Leonard, president of ERSystems, Rockford, MN, was named the interim president of RRCI. “Because of the growing importance of the California Energy Commission’s Title 24 program, we felt the time was right to form an organization that would not only promote reflective roof coatings but also provide a means to educate the end-users of their benefits”, stated Leonard at the recent organization meeting. At present the RRCI is engaged in actively recruiting new members and have had twenty companies become Founding Members of the Institute. Ken Bowman, president of the Robstan Group, Inc – an association management company located in Kansas City, MO – has been retained to act as the executive director and help manage RRCI. Bowman said, “With our experience in managing construction related associations, we are very proud that the Robstan Group has been chosen to be RRCI’s partners in getting this association started.” The next meeting of RRCI will be held in Las Vegas on February 12, 2006 at the Tropicana Resort & Casino that will be open to the entire industry. “At this meeting, we will continue the business of establishing the Institute but we are also going to have general sessions to discuss issues facing our industry. We feel this meeting will be a great start for RRCI in helping provide an educational venue for reflective roof coatings”, stated Leonard. There are three categories of membership in RRCI: Manufacturer, Raw Material Supplier and Associate, which includes sales representatives, design professionals, consultants, architects and engineers. For more information about the Reflective Roof Coatings Institute, please contact Ken Bowman at 816.472.8870 or visit www.reflectivecoatings.org. # # #

Storms can do great harm to roofs. After the storm has completely passed, you should immediately check for roof damage. Check your roof from one end to another so you can properly diagnose the storm effects. If you miss just one spot or neglected one problem area, you may pay dearly, not just for roof repairs but also for replacement of damaged valuable furniture and home furnishings.

The Need for Temporary Storm Damage Roof Repair

Unless you are a trained carpenter or an engineer, or you know someone skilled who can get to work immediately, all you can do is try to perform minor and temporary repairs on your roof immediately after a storm. Temporary roof repair is necessary so that you can prevent further damage when another storm hits before you get your roof permanently repaired. Temporary roof repair is also necessary to ensure your home’s integrity and ensure that your family has adequate protection against the elements.

After you have assessed your roof and identified problem areas, get to work. The most pressing problem is roof holes. You need to plug up these holes immediately. Obviously, holes in the roof will mean leaks when it rains. They also mean that cold air or hot air can escape from your home. This inefficiency will cost you dearly in your electricity bills. Sure you may be able to do a little stargazing from the comfort of your living room recliner, but I think most would agree that a hole in the roof is very high priority on temporary repair lists.

How to Do Storm Damage Roof Repair

The most expedient way to repair your roof after a storm is to spread tarpaulin or water-proof canvass over your entire leaky roof. It is better to use the tarpaulin over your roof rather than under the roof and inside your house since doing the latter will lead to water collecting and leaking inside your home.

Remember to do this very carefully and with adequate assistance from capable members of your family. Be sure, too, to cover your roof up really tightly so that the wind cannot get under the tarpaulin or canvass and rip it and the rest of your roof off. After you have pulled the covering over your roof as tightly as you and your assistant(s) can manage, secure the ends with strong ropes and nails so that even a fairly strong gust of wind will not be able to undermine your temporary storm damage repair.

One other way of doing temporary storm damage roof repair is by going up there and sealing holes up with roof sealant. Use the appropriate safety paraphernalia like safety ladders and rope support so that you can prevent any accident from happening.

The Need for Permanent Storm Damage Roof Repair

After you have secured your home and fixed your storm damaged roof the best way you can, you need to call an expert carpenter or contractor to proceed with permanent storm damage control and repair to your roofs. An expert can perform the proper maintenance and thereby help you properly repair the damage the storm wrought on your roof.

Hiring a professional to repair your storm-ravaged roof may be expensive. However, in the long run, this is the most effective way of preventing other more catastrophic and more expensive damage to your home. Your initial assessment and your temporary roof repair efforts will never be enough to ensure your home’s survival on the next storm.

Ventilation is a vital component to any good roofing job in Portland OR. In addition to installing a quality rooftop, your roofing contractor in Portland should construct an adequate ventilation system. Learn more about the importance of proper ventilation for your OR roof.

Adequate Roofing Ventilation Increases the Longevity of Your OR Roof

Your roofing contractor in Portland can describe for you how proper ventilation is the most important element in the lifespan of your roof. A solid ventilation system for your OR roof can increase its longevity by as much as a decade. In fact, while inadequate roofing materials or the workmanship might be contributing factors to premature roof damage, the cause is most often due to poor roof ventilation.

The Benefits of Roof Ventilation — Moisture Control

A quality roofing job in Portland OR consists of a ventilation system that helps to regulate moisture levels within the home. Most homes produce an average of five pounds of water vapor each day. Without proper ventilation for your OR roof, the woodwork inside your home can start to rot, the insulation can lose its efficiency and your home can become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

Components of a Proper Roof Ventilation System

Your roofing job in Portland should result in a properly installed ventilation system that effectively balances airflow and controls the temperature underneath the roofing structure. Adequate ventilation for your OR roof consists of two parts: intake and exhaust.

The intake and exhaust hoses create an air exchange system to prevent the temperature under the roof from getting to hot. Hot air flows out, while cool air from the outside flows in.

Your roofing contractor in Portland will install roof vents to help circulate air and prevent condensation. The number and placement of vents should be in compliance with Portland building codes.

Roofing Portland OR — Types of Ventilation for Your Roof

Proper roof ventilation for your home can be achieved through a variety of methods. Common roof vents include dormer vents, turbine vents, gable vents, ridge vents and circular vents.

The most adequate ventilation system is comprised of vents that not only maximize the balance of airflow, but also work well with the appearance of your home. Consult with your roofing contractor in Portland to determine which type of ventilation system will work best for your OR roof.

There are a few ways to clean roofs but they all rely on the same principle, low pressure cleaning with the use of a cleaning agent. Most roof cleaners use a sodium hydroxide base or sodium Hypochlorite. Bleach is used most often, but sometimes with disastrous results. GAF roofing says that the use of bleach immediately voids any warranty on an asphalt roof because it breaks down the composition of the shingle. These stains are impossible to remove without the aid of chemicals. Caustics are inexpensive and very effective for killing mold. No matter which method or cleaner you use they can cause significant plant damage around the home or to the roof if not used properly. Safety is also a huge factor in roof cleaning, using an OSHA approved safety harness and ropes are a must. Never attempt cleaning a roof without proper safety precautions; even the flattest roof can become slippery and hazardous when wet.
Most roof cleaning requests will be for removing green mildew or black streaks and stains (mold algae also known as ‘gloeocapsa magma’). These stains significantly affect the look of any home. On occasion you will also notice moss growing on roofs, what the home owner may not realize is that mildew and moss can actually eat away the roofing on the home.
In the past, the only way to get rid of them was to replace the roof. It has been estimated that as much as 50% of all roof replacements have been done because of the appearance of the roof and not actually because of its functionality.
We suggest using the following method: First, using an X-Jet, wet the roof slightly to cool it down. Also soak the ground and any plants near the downspouts to dilute the cleaner. Second, using a chicken ladder along with a roped harness or another OSHA approved method, apply your roof cleaner. This can be done with an X-Jet, pump up sprayer or Shurflow pump, no matter which method you use apply it to the shingles from the lowest part of the roof up to the peak. When applying cleaners make sure you don’t shoot them under the shingles, if using an X-Jet shoot above the roof and allow the cleaner to “fall” onto the roofing like rain. After applying your cleaner, allow the cleaner to work for about 15 minutes then begin power washing with 100-300PSI from the peak of the roof down. Always make sure the spray from your wand is aimed down the roof, never across or up the incline. This will shoot water under the shingles and cause leaks. It will also get cleaner on the nails that fasten down the shingles. Most roof cleaning chemicals will cause rapid rusting of fasteners.
Finally, rinse the surface and plants around the area well. Rinsing of the roof can be done from the ground using your X-Jet.

Roof consultants can save homeowners and property owners hundreds of thousands of dollars. Paramount Disaster Recovery Inc. launches three new web sites to help property owners navigate the roof damage insurance claims process. Palos Verdes, CA (PRWEB) June 13, 2005 — Now that the rainy season has ended many homeowners and building owners are looking to make roof repairs. Unfortunately most of them will end up paying far more for those repairs than they should because they don™t understand the roof damage insurance claim process. Homeowners can save themselves a great deal of money and countless headaches by using a roof consultant firm, such as Paramount Disaster Recovery Inc., to handle the entire roof damage insurance claim process. Insurance companies are looking to limit or deny payout on roof damage claims. Many causes of roof damage, including foot traffic, high winds, and hail among others, are covered by most insurance policies. However, many of these legitimate claims are rejected or only partially paid for by the homeowner™s insurance company because of poor documentation or incomplete roof inspection. That is where a roof consultant can end up saving the homeowner hundreds of thousands of dollars in roof repair costs. One recent Paramount client was initially awarded a $1500 claim to patch their roof that had been damaged by high winds. After Paramount had a chance to access the total damage it was discovered that the roof patch that the insurance company had recommended was an inadequate solution and had in fact led to mold growth within the structure. The Paramount team of insurance claim consultants re-filed the claim documenting the original damage along with the additional mold damage and won a settlement of $380,000 for the client. This paid for the mold removal and a complete roof replacement. Without the help of Paramount™s roof consultants the client would have had to pay those costs completely out of his own pocket. For a homeowner, commercial building owner, even Homeowners Associations the roof damage insurance claim process can be an overwhelming experience. In order to make the process easier Paramount is launching three new web sites, www.roof-damage.com, www.calshake.com, and www.cemwood.com. Roof consultants can save property owners hundreds of thousands of dollars and countless headaches. Now Paramount has made the process even easier with three new web sites designed to provide the information and resources needed to get your roof fixed right. About Paramount Disaster Recovery Inc.: Since 1989 Paramount Disaster Recovery has been helping individual homeowners, business owners, and homeowner associations (HOA) with their roof repair needs, including roof consultants, insurance claim consultants, and roofing contractors. Paramount is a proud member of the Building Owners & Managers Association International, the Community Associations Institute, and the National Institute of Disaster Restoration.

St. Louis based Wind Engineering firm utilized Green Roof Blocks ™, to install the environment friendly roof at its Oak Bend office building. (PRWEB) November 19, 2005 — On Oct. 21 Wind Engineering went Green. The St. Louis based engineering firm utilized Green Roof Blocks ™, to install the environment friendly roof at its Oak Bend office building. Green Roofs are aesthetic vegetated roof covers that help to reduce energy consumption and costs, decrease storm water runoff, and preserve the life of roof materials. Many communities are looking to the green roofing concept as a possible strategy of replacing the green space sacrificed by the building process. While traditional green roofs are expensive, require expensive water proofing, drainage systems and an excessive amount of soil, Wind Engineering opted for the new portable system developed by Green Roof Blocks™. Green Roof Blocks™ are self contained portable units that hold four square feet of drought resistant sedum foliage that are available in over 400 plant styles. The 98 Green Roof Blocks™ installed for the Wind Engineering project were grown off site for nearly three months to allow the plants to develop and mature. This option allowed the rooftop to be instantly green with fully grown plants rather than the typical seedlings planted in many green roofs. The Green Roof Blocks™ were hoisted to the roof using a shingle roofing conveyor provided by Roofers Mart, an area roofing supplier. “This was the first time we used a conveyor to roof load our green roof. It really worked out well,” said Kelly Luckett, president of Green Roof Blocks™. “We were able to roof load and install 98 Green Roof Blocks™ in under 40 minutes. That’s less than half the time of using a crane.” Green Roof Blocks™ is a subsidiary of St. Louis Metalworks, with offices located at 11701 New Halls Ferry Rd., Florissant, MO 63033. The company maintains a web site at: www.greenroofblocks.com and media site at, www.greenroofsmedia.com. ###
